Professor Stuart Carmichael is one of the leading lights in the field of veterinary osteoarthritis.  In a career spanning decades, he has worked with many of the true greats of the veterinary profession.  His passion for making animals’ lives better is tangible and infectious.  It was a privilege to sit down and chat with Prof Carmichael.

From the position of being an almost lone voice advocating for a better understanding of veterinary OA, Prof Carmichael has been instrumental in encouraging interest in this subject.  One can finally feel a significant groundswell in our profession taking an interest in improved osteoarthritis care.

In this discussion, we explore some of the common misconceptions about osteoarthritis.  Prof Carmichael explains how our understanding of osteoarthritis changed in recent years.  Some of the common OA causes are mentioned, as well as the pertinent differences between OA in dogs and cats.

We talk about how research in the past tended to concentrate on the articular cartilage, whereas now we have a much broader understanding of the joint as an organ, and how this pathology affects the whole patient.

Thinking back to the time when offering a single NSAID was considered the standard of care for osteoarthritis, we compare how far we have come as a profession.  The Professor offers a new paradigm for 21st-century best practice.

Finally, we talk about how digital platforms have been developed and may further enhance our ability to deliver optimal osteoarthritis management
