About
Matthew has a master’s degree in veterinary physiotherapy from the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, where he now works part-time as a Teaching Associate.
Matthew has a background in zoo-keeping, and teaching zoo and behavioural sciences, and he completed research into Komodo dragon locomotion with the support of 5 major UK zoos, field researchers and experts at the Royal Veterinary College.
Matthew has been a zoo consultant for a variety of major UK zoos, consulting on gait assessment, enclosure design and has treated a variety of species including gorillas, giraffes, orangutans, rhinos, tapirs, polar bears, penguins, giant tortoises and Komodo dragons.
He treats a variety of domesticated animals and delivers BIAZA (The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited CPD for veterinary and zoo professionals (internationally) as part of his company Shackleton Veterinary Physiotherapy and is also a regular guest speaker at universities and conferences (including BVZS, UK Zoo Vet meeting, VETRUST, RVC, ACPAT, British Herpetological Society, RAWG, BIAZA, NVZS, SVZS, Australasian Association of Zookeepers).
He has also recently written a book chapter on the ethical use of physiotherapy in geriatric captive animals (within zoological management systems), and risks that may be associated with more traditional physical therapy approaches due to stress or contraindications for certain pathologies and taxonomic groups.
